Akron Antiquarian Book & Paper Show

Approximately three dozen dealer in old, rare, antiquarian and collectible books will be on hand to chat with collectors and other interested book lovers about their selections. In addition, there are free sessions about collecting, value, and ephemera.

More than one hundred authors who write fiction, nonfiction, young adult, children’s and more will be there to share their thoughts in panel presentations and solo talks. A Target Kids’ Corner will offer crafts and reading time.

Buckeye Book Fair

Cleveland Antiquarian Book & Paper Show

This fair features more than two dozen dealers showing and selling antiquarian books, paper ephemera, autographs, prints, and maps. There will also be a free appraisal service for those who bring a single book. Brunch and a cash bar will also be available.

Ohioana Book Festival

Funny how something that originally used to be nothing but cheap (in looks and quality) has risen to the heights of respectability. And price. Those who celebrate the originality of pulp magazines and related materials, digests, vintage paperbacks, men’s adventure and true crime magazines, first-edition hardcovers, series books, dime novels, original art, Big Little Books, B-movies, serials and related paper collectibles, old-time-radio shows, and Golden and Silver Age comic books should not miss this one.

Spring Literary Festival

This annual festival, held on the Ohio University campus, features some of the world’s finest writers of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction in reading and lecture appearances.

OKLAHOMA
Mildred Laughlin Festival of Books for Young People

Despite its name, this all-day event of author and illustrator talks, book sales and signings, and professional networking is a specialized festival for adults personally or professionally interested in children’s books.

OREGON
Rose City Used Book Fair

This festival is sponsored by independent booksellers who bring thousands of used, bargain, and collectible books along with prints, ephemera, and door prizes. Book lovers only!

Wordstock
Location: Portland
Date: October 3-6, 2013
Where else but the city that is home to the world’s largest independent used and new bookstore (hint: Powell’s) could a festival as great as this reside? With more than 100 booths, 200 authors, eight stages, workshops, readings, signings, music food, children’s events, a Wordstock for Writers, Wordstock for Teachers and more (and even more pre-festival events such as the Night of Literary Feasts), this fair promises and delivers a lot!

PENNSYLVANIA
Allentown Antique Book, Paper & Advertising Show

Antiquarian books plus all sorts of ephemera are the highlight of these three annual shows that take place during the last Saturday and Sunday in April, the third Saturday in July, and the first Saturday and Sunday of October.

Celebrate the Book

South Dakota Festival of Books

TENNESSEE
Southern Festival of Books

A three-day literary festival that gathers together more than 200 authors covering every genre, offers panel discussions, readings and book signings, includes more than 50 book-related exhibitors, a cooking stage and two performance stages, and special children’s events with book characters.

Tennessee Antiquarian Book Fair

This antiquarian book fair offers visitors the chance to have up to three books appraised as part of their admission (five dollars). With more than two dozen booksellers in attendance, the opportunity to chat with and view extraordinary books--even if you can't afford them--is something not to be missed. The joy of seeing lovely editions is well worth it.

Houston Book Fair

Taking place at the Museum of Printing History, this festival incorporates working book studios with demonstrations, a wide variety of items for sale, free book appraisals, several presentations, and nearly two dozen vendors.

LitCrawl

This special literary evening, a collaboration of literary magazine American Short Fiction, the Texas Book Festival, and the East Sixth Street neighborhood, will feature some of America’s most groundbreaking and beloved writers onstage and in conversation at six venues in East Austin.

North Texas Book & Paper Show

If you are interested in used, rare and collectible Books, ephemera, or other paper collectible, this two-and-a-half-day fair is an excellent place to enjoy and to buy. Admission is five dollars.

North Texas Book Festival

A Book Trails Dinner, authors, book signings and special children’s programs are what this small, but quality festival offers. It’s certainly worth checking out.

Texas Book Festival

This festival is somewhat unusual in that it takes place at the state capitol. It features a lovely opening event, a First Editions Literary Gala, the Reading Rock Stars program and an opening ceremony along with the usual offerings of authors, panels, workshops, readings, signings, vendors and stage entertainment. West Texas Book Festival

Date: September 18-22, 2012
Featuring a Books & Books Luncheon, a Cookbook Gala and the Abilene Book Awards as well as author and writer panels and presentations, receptions, brown bag and Authors in Schools programs and more, this festival is a winner.

UTAH
Utah Humanities Book Festival
Location: Salt Lake City
Date: October 1-31, 2013
This festival has events happening around the entire state rather than in one location during the month of October. They also have some rather unusual events including the Utah Literary Awards, concerts, interviews, panels, readings, performances, book sales and signings, letterpress printing, bookmaking and papermaking, hands-on activities for children, rare book appraisals, a Day of the Dead Authors (sitting among the tombstones of their favorite dead children’s authors while reading), a Define-a-Thon and more.

VERMONT
Battleboro Literary Festival

A three-day literary celebration, the Festival includes readings, panel discussions, and special events, featuring almost three dozen emerging and established authors.

Booktopia
Location: Manchester
Date: April 12-14, 2013
These retreats sell out early so you should check at least several months ahead of time if you are interested in attending one. (See also California and Mississippi for the 2012 events.) Booktopia is about connecting readers with authors, and connecting readers with readers. It is limited to 75 guests to keep an intimate feel about it. It begins with small group sessions, includes the Celebration of Authors at their partner bookstore, and the popular Yankee Swap. This is an individual, pay-as-you-go on your own hang-out-with-friends kind of weekend. You pay for your own lodging and meals—so that people can stick to their own budget.

Vermont Spring Book & Ephemera Fair

Antiquarian booksellers from Vermont and nearby states come to offer rare and collectible books, maps, prints, postcards, and other ephemera. The entrance fee is small but the quality is high. 

Vermont Summer Book Fair

This is an opportunity to see and buy rare and collectible books, antique maps and prints, and literary-related ephemera from forty of the best eastern-located dealers. In addition, bookbinder Malcolm Summers will be showing off his fine work.

VIRGINIA
Fall for the Book Festival

This week-long event includes lectures, talks, receptions, readings, a used book sale, music, children’s entertainment, all of which revolve around writing, reading, books, current events and more. 

Lex Allen Literary Festival

Malice Domestic

This is a three-day convention that brings together the readers and writers of the “traditional” mystery—those which contain no explicit sex or excessive violence, and usually feature an amateur detective, a confined setting and characters who know one another. In addition to author panels, presentations and signings, they have two auctions (one live, one silent) with proceeds going to a local charity,

Virginia Festival of the Book

Washington Antiquarian Book Fair

National Book Festival

Ohio River Festival of Books

West Virginia Book Festival

WISCONSIN
Chippewa Valley Book Festival

This is not a standard festival but rather a dynamic week-long event with a variety of programs that promote reading and writing. Authors and readers are brought together through readings, book discussions, workshops, author receptions, and children’s programs. Schools benefit from authors' appearances, and the conclusion is the reading by the winners of the Creative Writing Competition for Young Writers.

Fox Cities Book Festival
